Rivian Boosts R2 Annual Production Capacity to 175,000 Units

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has raised its planned production capacity for the upcoming R2 model at its Normal, Illinois facility to up to 175,000 units per year. The upward revision represents an increase of 20,000 vehicles, or roughly 12.9%, compared to the capacity projections previously announced by the Irvine-based automaker in May 2024.

Under earlier projections, Rivian anticipated that the Normal manufacturing plant would produce 155,000 R2 vehicles annually by 2026. Those previous estimates also factored in a production capacity of 85,000 R1S and R1T vehicles alongside 65,000 electric delivery vans (EDVs). However, the latest adjustments reflect shifting strategic priorities at the company as it prepares for the wider rollout of its newer platform.

Production Adjustments at the Normal Facility

The update regarding the plant’s expanded capabilities came to light during an interview on Stripe’s Cheeky Pint show. Founder and Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe discussed the facility’s evolving layout, confirming that the plant in Illinois will be capable of manufacturing up to 175,000 units of the R2 annually.

While expanding capacity for the highly anticipated R2, the company has quietly scaled back planned manufacturing volumes for its existing R1 line of adventure vehicles. The strategic rebalancing is designed to accommodate the high demand expected for the more affordable R2 platform while optimizing factory output at the central Illinois production hub.

Broader Outlook and Industry Context

The manufacturing milestone highlights Rivian’s ongoing efforts to scale operations and streamline production efficiency. Alongside the updates to its vehicle assembly targets, the company continues to develop and expand strategic partnerships, including technology and venture initiatives involving AI voice assistants and shared platform components.

As the automotive industry transitions further toward electrification, capacity adjustments at major manufacturing hubs like the Normal facility remain a critical indicator of production readiness. Further updates regarding delivery timelines and exact volume schedules are expected as Rivian moves closer to full-scale R2 manufacturing.
