New York Declares State Emergency Over Measles Outbreak

October 9, 2026 · N83Zz

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued an executive order declaring a State Disaster Emergency in response to a rising number of measles cases across the state. The announcement comes as health officials grapple with a broader resurgence of the highly contagious disease domestically and internationally, alongside a significant outbreak in neighboring Pennsylvania.

As of October 3, New York has recorded 108 confirmed measles cases this year. While New York City has documented seven cases, the vast majority—101 cases—have occurred outside the metropolitan area across 18 rural counties. State officials note that these rural communities feature pockets of lower immunization rates, creating fertile ground for the virus to spread.

Expanding Vaccine Access and Emergency Measures

To combat the ongoing transmission, Governor Hochul’s emergency order temporarily expands the authority of qualified health professionals to administer the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and provide testing. The expanded measures are designed to support community partners and local health departments as they work to immunize vulnerable populations and contain further outbreaks.

"After reviewing the latest data on measles cases in New York State, I am declaring a State Disaster Emergency to strengthen our ongoing efforts to confront this disease," Governor Hochul said in a statement. "No one should get seriously ill or die from a vaccine-preventable disease. That is why I have taken steps to increase the number of health professionals who can vaccinate and test."

Understanding Measles Risks and Symptoms

Health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), emphasize the severity of measles, which was previously considered all but eliminated in the United States. Early symptoms typically include a high fever reaching up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, a persistent cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Two to three days after initial symptoms appear, patients may develop Koplik spots, which are small white spots inside the mouth on the inner cheeks, followed by the characteristic rash.

Public health authorities continue to urge all eligible residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date, highlighting the MMR vaccine as the most effective defense against severe illness and community transmission.
