Yemen’s Houthi movement has launched a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes targeting the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh and critical energy infrastructure, escalating regional tensions. The ongoing aerial campaign has prompted multiple interceptions by the Saudi-led coalition and resulted in civilian injuries, residential property damage, and a limited fire at a major oil facility.
Attacks Target Riyadh Airport and Energy Infrastructure
The recent escalation features repeated missile and drone operations directed at strategic locations inside the kingdom. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for a series of strikes, including a ballistic missile operation targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Previous strikes in the multi-day wave have caused casualties and significant property damage, according to reports from regional authorities and international news outlets.
In addition to the capital’s main airport, Houthi operations have targeted energy infrastructure. A limited fire broke out at the headquarters of state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco in Dhahran following a suspected Houthi attack. In response to the widening threats, the group issued broad warnings urging international shipping companies, workers, and civilians to evacuate airports and oil facilities across the region.
Saudi Interceptions and Civil Defense Response
Saudi authorities and the Saudi-led coalition reported successfully intercepting multiple incoming ballistic and cruise missiles fired toward Riyadh and surrounding areas. Loud booms echoed across the capital as air defense systems engaged incoming projectiles. However, falling debris and shrapnel from intercepted missiles have caused ground damage.
Saudi civil defense officials confirmed that falling debris injured at least four people and damaged approximately 15 residential homes in the Riyadh province. The General Directorate of Saudi Civil Defence issued emergency alerts via its national early warning platform for the capital and the Al-Kharj governorate before later declaring that the immediate danger had passed.
Regional Escalation and Ongoing Uncertainty
The latest cross-border strikes mark a sharp escalation in hostilities, following retaliatory and preemptive military actions by the Saudi-led coalition, including reported airstrikes hitting fuel facilities in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa. While air defense systems have intercepted the majority of incoming projectiles, the sustained barrage underscores persistent security risks to civilian aviation and global energy supplies.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the structural damage and casualties from the consecutive days of attacks. As military operations from both sides continue, international observers remain on high alert regarding the safety of vital commercial and industrial infrastructure in the region.
