Syria Weighs Military Aid for Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Conflict

October 9, 2026 · N83Zz

Syria is carefully considering providing military assistance to key ally Saudi Arabia as an escalating conflict against Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen intensifies, according to a U.S. official and a Syrian military official briefed on the matter.

The deliberations follow a surge in missile and drone attacks by the Houthis targeting Saudi infrastructure, including strikes on Saudi airports that recently killed three people. In response to the intensifying threat, Saudi Arabia has reportedly requested military backing from Damascus.

Options for Military Cooperation

Options currently under review include defensive aid designed to protect the kingdom from incoming aerial attacks, as well as the potential deployment of forces in an offensive capacity. Such a deployment would aim to assist Saudi-backed Yemeni troops in taking the fight directly to the Houthi movement.

International observers note that any direct military involvement by Syria against the Iran-backed Houthis carries significant geopolitical complexities. It could potentially be viewed as a hostile move by Iran, along with regional allies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and allied militias in Iraq—factions with which Syria’s post-war leadership has a history of conflict.

Official Responses and Domestic Priorities

Official statements from Syrian diplomatic channels have emphasized solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of Houthi attacks while underscoring that Damascus’s primary focus remains on domestic recovery following years of civil war.

A Syrian diplomat stated that any prospective military cooperation, exchange of expertise, or formal assistance would occur strictly through official channels and within the framework of existing bilateral agreements between the two nations. Meanwhile, regional allies have also mobilized support, with Pakistan reportedly deploying cargo planes carrying military equipment to Aden in southern Yemen and stationing troops within Saudi Arabia to help safeguard its borders.
