Tropical Depression Nine Forms in Gulf, Threatening U.S. Coast

October 7, 2026 · N83Zz

Tropical Depression Nine has formed in the western Gulf of Mexico and is rapidly gaining strength, prompting warnings of a potential hurricane strike along the United States Gulf Coast later this week. Forecasters project the system will become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

As of Tuesday evening, the system was located about 600 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, packing maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and moving slowly eastward at around 5 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, the system achieved a closed circulation to become a tropical depression and is expected to soon intensify into Tropical Storm Isaias.

Forecast Track and Intensification

Meteorologists expect the system to drift near the Yucatán Peninsula before making a sharp turn northward toward the northern Gulf Coast by Thursday or Friday. Record-warm Gulf waters and favorable atmospheric conditions are expected to fuel rapid intensification.

While some forecasting models project the system could peak as a Category 2 hurricane with winds reaching 100 mph over the central Gulf before weakening slightly toward landfall, other projections anticipate it arriving as a strong tropical storm or Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane Hunter aircraft are scheduled to investigate the system to gather precise data on its structure and wind speeds.

Expected Impacts Along the Gulf Coast

Hazardous conditions are expected to begin arriving across portions of the northern Gulf Coast as early as Friday. Areas stretching from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle face growing threats of flooding rainfall, powerful winds, and dangerous storm surge.

Forecasters warn that rainfall totals could reach up to 10 inches locally, with widespread amounts of 3 to 6 inches pushing inland through the weekend. Additionally, coastal areas face heavy swells, strong rip currents, and the potential for isolated tornadoes spun up by outer rainbands as the system approaches land.

Residents across the northern Gulf Coast are advised to monitor official forecasts and review hurricane preparedness plans as the storm system continues to organize.
