Barber Hailed Hero After Australian MP Helen Haines Hit by Car

A local barber has been widely praised as a hero after rushing to disarm and detain a driver who allegedly struck independent Australian MP Helen Haines with a four-wheel drive outside her regional electorate office.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, northeastern Victoria. Dr. Haines, 65, was struck in a car park near her office and suffered critical injuries, prompting an immediate outpouring of concern and emergency medical response.

Barber Intervenes and Detains Driver

Ricky Jefferies, a father of three who runs a barbershop neighboring Dr. Haines’s office, heard a loud bang and rushed outside to investigate. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Mr. Jefferies pulled the driver from the Toyota LandCruiser and performed a citizen’s arrest, restraining him until police arrived.

During the intervention, Mr. Jefferies noticed the driver had a knife in his pocket. “He did have a knife. He didn’t pull it out. I just wasn’t comfortable with his movements, and so I basically just took it out of his pocket and threw it away,” Mr. Jefferies told reporters.

Despite being hailed across the country for his swift actions—with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly labeling him a hero—Mr. Jefferies played down his bravery. He credited other local bystanders who also rushed to assist, including a person who sat in front of the vehicle to prevent the driver from escaping. “I don’t think I’m a hero, I think that I just was a person who had an opportunity to intervene in a safe-ish sort of way,” Mr. Jefferies said, adding that he tried to show the detained driver calm reassurance.

Official Investigation and Prime Minister’s Response

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the incident, describing it as a “deliberate act” and praising Dr. Haines as a “thoroughly decent human being” and a well-loved member of her community. Australian authorities confirmed that a 43-year-old man from nearby Tarrawingee was arrested at the scene by the passerby and taken into police custody.

While the exact motive behind the apparent attack remains unknown, the Joint Counter Terrorism Team has become involved in the ongoing investigation. Police forces are continuing to interview the suspect and examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Dr. Haines’s family has released a statement confirming she is receiving necessary medical care. Local community members and political leaders across Australia continue to send their best wishes for her recovery as police investigations proceed.
