Dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets and refueling aircraft conducted a massive military sortie flying as far as the Iranian border, according to Israeli and U.S. officials. The large-scale operation served as a “power projection” exercise designed to deter potential Iranian attacks ahead of Israel’s upcoming Knesset elections.
According to reports detailing the operation, the aircraft flew more than 800 miles from Israel along a route that passed through Syrian and Iraqi airspace, mimicking a flight path consistent with a potential strike on Iran. The jets ultimately turned around as they approached the Iranian border and safely returned to Israeli territory.
Details of the Deterrence Operation and U.S. Notification
Israeli authorities notified the United States in advance of the training sortie. U.S. officials indicated that the operation was intended to send a strong deterrence signal to Tehran ahead of the October 27 elections in Israel. At the same time, some U.S. officials noted an impression that parts of the Israeli establishment may have hoped the maneuver could provoke an Iranian response, which would supply justification for retaliatory Israeli strikes.
The long-range flight coincided with a visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Israel’s Ovda Air Base. However, officials clarified that the military sortie itself was not directly tied to the defense secretary’s visit.
Netanyahu’s Warnings and Internal Military Oversight
The exercise occurred against a backdrop of escalating regional tensions and sharp rhetoric from Israeli leadership. Speaking at a military graduation ceremony on Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged that Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, had “decided to follow in his father’s footsteps” and permitted Iranian scientists to advance toward building a nuclear weapon.
Meanwhile, internal political and military dynamics within Israel have also shaped the timing of such operations. An Israeli official stated that Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has maintained that the military will not permit unjustified operations that could risk undermining or disrupting the upcoming October 27 elections.
Authorities in Tehran have experienced ongoing internal debates regarding war warnings and diplomacy, following recent leadership and cabinet developments, including the confirmation of Mehrdad Akhlaghi as Iran’s new defense minister. As diplomatic and military positioning continues to evolve, neither nation has announced immediate further escalations following the completion of the aerial exercise.
